Serge Gay Jr: “Absolute Happiness”
Opening Night

A very big thank you to the hundreds of people who came by this past weekend to celebrate the opening of Serge Gay Jr’s solo show “Absolute Happiness.”

Attendees were greeted with a variety of murals, a room packed with stunning paintings, complimentary refreshments and a fundraising raffle for Hand in Hand for Haiti.

About the auction
The aim of this action is to raise as much money for ‘War Child as possible, raise public awareness of this charity and remind people of the horror and reality of war which is all too often presented in a sanitized or glamorous way.

About Warchild
I think ‘War Child’ is a very cool charity, they don’t parade the kids in front of TV cameras to get sympathy they don’t guilt trip people for donations and they stay on after the media loses interest. They just help kids, whose lives have been shattered by the conflict around them, with empathy, sensitivity and cultural understanding.

About the image
The background of this image is made up of a collage of indiscriminate anti-personnel hardware. In particular and most sinister is the ‘Butterfly Mine’ small, light, colourful and lethal. This mine is very attractive to children, resembling a small toy, and was used over wide areas of Afghanistan during the USSR conflict with catastrophic results.

This image began life as a digital collage which I then work on with a whole range of painting and photography programs. The image is then turned into a unique and archivally permanent canvas forming a platform to work on utilising ink, charcoal, conte, acrylic and spray paint. The final process involves various tinted glazes and varnishes to build up a sealed protective surface.

Sam Wolfe Connelly – Solo Show

Spoke Art is pleased to present Semiprecious, a solo show by Sam Wolfe Connelly. This series of illustrations will be Sam’s first solo show following his recent relocation to New York City and graduation from the prestigious SCAD.

Semiprecious is based around the amorphous narrative of being left by someone. This visual chronicle evokes the feeling of being flawed and knowing that there is always going to be something more precious than you. Sam’s drawings are inspired by grave robbing and underground mining; two subjects that darkly probe the depths of both the physical and spiritual worlds. The artist communicates what it is like to try and steal back what you’ve lost, but ultimately being stuck in a black mineshaft with nothing but soot and diamonds around you.

Lighting is addressed with steadfast urgency in this collection of works. Connelly lets light guide the viewer to places previously shrouded in darkness: only exposed by careful introspection. This diverse set of pieces varies from the wholly subterranean, to the light and effervescent. Through the lens of precious stones themselves, the artist explores the way light is captured, reflected and transformed by natures most sought after and rare treasures. He produces intricate relationships between subject, stone, artist and viewer.

To celebrate Connelly’s debut solo showing, Spoke Art is proud to announce that the artist will be in attendance. Additionally, the gallery and artist will be offering free limited edition, signed and numbered, mini prints to the first one hundred attendees of the opening reception.

About the artist:
Sam Wolfe Connelly was born in 1988 and has recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His work has been featured in the Society of Illustrators (NYC), and New York Times.com, Creative Quarterly. Some of his clients include Playboy Magazine, Hasbro, Colors Magazine, SCAD, and Coheed & Cambria.

I got a mail in my box today from the new owner of Thumbtack Press, Barry Friedland. The mail was regarding the relaunch of Thumbtack Press, and when I checked it out, my eyes bugged out of my head. My name is Barry Friedland and I am the owner and curator of the recently redesigned online art collection, Thumbtack Press. We have developed a flourishing community of low brow, illustrator and fine artists and I am contacting you because of our shared passion for this community to flourish.
