Spoke Art is proud to announce the release of a brand new and exclusive limited edition print by artist Emory Douglas. From 1967 to the 1980s, Douglas served as the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party and was responsible for the majority of visual imagery created in support of the party and was featured in most issues of the Black Panther Newspaper, which reached a peak circulation of 139,000 per week in 1970.

“My Daddy’s Gun” first appeared in the Black Panther Newspaper on November 14th, 1970 and is an 18″ x 24″ two-color screen print, available in an edition of 100 signed and numbered copies.

On Friday night, January 13th, Spoke Art will host a book release party for Sean Stewart’s (of Babylon Falling fame) “On the Ground: An Illustrated Anecdotal History of the Sixties Underground Press in the US.” Attendees will receive the first chance to purchase the print in person at the event.

A general release of any remaining copies will be available online at the Spoke Art store the afternoon of Saturday, January 14th.

Let’s start off the year with a giveaway!
So I’d like to offer a drawing for some free art to welcome 2012. Up for grabs will be these three pieces:

The first name drawn will receive the original drawing I made for my latest print: “In My Dream I Heard You Call My Name.” It measures around 18 x 20 inches and is a mixed media drawing (pencil, color pencil, ink) on archival grey Canson paper.

The second name drawn will receive one of the last existing copies of the print “Lay Down Your Burdens.” I sold all the copies I had set aside to sell online so this is a great chance to get one.

The third name drawn will receive a copy of the grey variant of “Protect Us.”

Mr Mead is a fine artist & illustrator inspired by Koji Morimoto, Shaun Tan and Remi Wyart. He is also highly influenced by the emerging surrealist American contemporary art scene. Mr Mead is a traditional artist working in pen & ink mediums, often applying his practice to large scale character based pieces on reclaimed wood. He is a permanent resident at the long established Jamaica Street Studios, where he works feverishly in his chaotic attic on the rooftop of the Bristol art scene. The artist is driven by his obsession and childhood fear of anthropomorphism. His work is a cathartic process to release his inner nightmares after viewing at a premature age ‘The Tales of Beatrix Potter’ a 1976 Royal Ballet film by BAFTA nominated director Reginald Mills.

Finishing off the year with a bang at Black Book Gallery this month, the first ever Mile High & Rising group show (on display throughout December) will bring together over twenty-five of the city’s most active creative talent, exhibiting a collection of diverse work and representing a sample of the contemporary artscape currently happening in Denver. This will be an incredible mix of artwork, not to mention a prime opportunity to pick up a few pieces- all work will be priced at $100 or less – Double score!

Encompassing a wide variety of mediums and artistic styles, the show will not only highlight each individual artist’s contribution, but also the close knit community of art contributors that live and work in Denver (which includes many others). From upcoming to established artists, from graffiti to tattoo influences, from screen printing, to paint, drawing, photography and sculpture, Mile High And Rising will truly be a landmark show, and define a new tradition in the process. Next year, the show will continue with Mile High and Rising Vol. 2.

Serge Gay Jr: “Absolute Happiness”
Opening Night

A very big thank you to the hundreds of people who came by this past weekend to celebrate the opening of Serge Gay Jr’s solo show “Absolute Happiness.”

Attendees were greeted with a variety of murals, a room packed with stunning paintings, complimentary refreshments and a fundraising raffle for Hand in Hand for Haiti.
