Mr. Spray is an original character created by Shepard Fairey in 2004 as a street-art appropriation of an advertising character design of the 1950s. Mr. Spray is the first original vinyl figure design by Shepard in eleven years.

Mr. Spray is a rotocast vinyl figure, 11 inches tall. 4 points of articulation and packaged with an OBEY mini stencil. Illustrated card box packaging.

Mr. Spray was made in four colors:

* BLACK – limited to 350 pieces. Available at strangeco’s online retail shop and at select retailers.
* RED – limited to 350 pieces. Available at strangeco’s online retail shop and at select retailers.

Woody Guthrie Canvas Print by Shepard Fairey

This print reflects the format of the Woody Guthrie painting it is based upon. The print is on18x24 paper and will be signed and numbered just below the bottom border of the printed area… allowing the purchaser to choose between a standard(more affordable) 18×24 frame, or trimming the excess paper below the signature and custom framing the print. Cropping the image to more closely suit the 18×24 proportion compromised the composition.

Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) was an American folk singer and songwriter best known for the song “This Land Is Your Land” frequently sung in American schools. Though the song is used patriotically, it was originally intended as as a “power to the people” themed anthem, and had its more controversial verses edited out. Guthrie grew up in Oklahoma during the dust bowl and the depression which gave him empathy toward farmers and working class people in general. Guthrie was given the nickname “The Dust Bowl Troubadour” and wrote many songs championing workers, unions, outlaws, farmers, and the downtrodden. When Woody performed he often had the slogan “This Machine Kills Fascists” emblazoned across his guitar. If Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” was the literary embodiment off the struggles of the era, Guthrie’s songs were the musical equivalent. Guthrie was blacklisted during the McCarthy era for his left leaning views. Woody Guthrie’s influence can be felt in the tradition of social justice in music ranging from Pete Seeger, to Johnny Cash, to Bob Dylan, to Jimi Hendrix, to Neil Young, to Joe Strummer(who’s original nickname was Woody”). In my MAYDAY art show, Guthrie was an essential inclusion for his tremendous influence on so many of my favorite musicians who have combined entertainment and social commentary. Proceeds from this print go to the Woody Guthrie Foundation. The painting and print are based on a photograph by Sid Grossman.

I’m producing this Obey Megaphone poster primarily to use in outdoor installations, but I decided to release a smaller signed edition after receiving several requests when the image was first seen in my NYC “May Day” mural. Free speech needs to be celebrated and exercised as a cornerstone of true participation in democracy. I think using your voice goes hand in hand with casting your vote. People with the courage to express a view that was unpopular have encouraged others to speak their minds and turned political tides. Don’t underestimate your power to make a difference. CAC x Print Release x Phone App

For those near Cincinnati and interested in seeing Shepard’s Supply and Demand, 20 Year Survey, this is the last month it will be on exhibit. The show is scheduled to close at the CAC on August 22nd. To celebrate its final days, we decided to collaborate with the CAC once again with a print. This print is a sister print to the original CAC print released in February. Shepard decided to take a new spin on the print and use the fine art canvas of the Rise Above Control image as the reference.

The title of this print “Moon Over Biloxi” is a tribute to the Dead Kennedy’s song “Moon Over Marin”. In 1984 I picked up maybe my 4th punk record which was the 2nd Dead Kennedy’s album “Plastic Surgery Disasters”. The album is a great listen all the way through and includes some blistering tunes like “Riot” and “Bleed For Me” laced with social commentary. The surprise song though is “Moon Over Marin”… detractors have called it the Dead Kennedy’s “U2″ song, but I disagree. “Moon Over Marin” is more melodic than most DK, but juxtaposed with the darkness of the lyrics, the song evokes a powerful sense of existential melancholy. I think the concept that struck me, and stuck with me, is that our disrespect of each other and the planet may doom us , but things will continue without us. I think it is healthy to recognize impermanence, but also to appreciate the value of the ephemeral. Moonlight, real or electric, will probably be around, but what it will be casting light on is the real question. There will always be a moon over Biloxi.

Cleveland-based youth culture magazine ALTERNATIVE PRESS (AP) is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a group exhibition at the prestigious Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles with a VIP party and opening reception July 9 and public viewing July 10. The gallery display– featuring AP’s vast archives and original works of art from iconic musicians and renowned visual artists–will be comprised of paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture.

What started out as a local fanzine 25 years ago has developed into an internationally distributed magazine covering the contemporary punk scene. The artists appearing in the gallery exhibit reflect the diversity that has appeared in the pages of ALTERNATIVE PRESS in the last quarter-century.

The Los Angeles art show will open on Friday, July 9 from 7:30pm-11:00pm (VIP party and opening reception). On Saturday, July 10, from 8:00-11:00pm (Public opening reception) at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery (170 S. La Brea, Los Angeles, CA 90036). The entire exhibition will be on view at the gallery from July 9–July 23, 2010. A New York art show is planned for October–stay tuned for more information.
